We're currently not aware of any short doc strands on the BBC but there is a new talent strand...
Fresh
Fresh is the BBC's new talent strand which broadcasts on BBC Three. Once a year they commissions three 60 min documentaries from new directors. Budgets are awarded up to £100,000 per film, which must cover all costs of the production. Each year a certain theme is set and new talent, who have not previously directed a 60 min TV documentary, can pitch ideas. Filmmakers must have significant experience, be over 18, and have developed their idea to such a stage that they can demonstrate it can be realised in a one hour documentary.
They look for films with humour, warmth and insight, that will be both surprising and have broad appeal for the BBC3 audience. Single narrative films with a strong central character, bold stunt based ideas, or social experiments are all considered.
NEW FOR 2010!!! It's just been announced (November 2009) that the Fresh strand is going to be doubled, with 6 episodes of the strand for 2010 rather than 3. According to Broadcast 'The 2010 competition is open to new film-makers and should explore the theme of becoming an adult in modern Britain'.
