The inspiration for this idea came from John himself and an exhibition he put on in the 1970s;  he decided to continue his series of photographs of Irish artists Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon by getting them together with William Burroughs to produce an exhibition -  Beckett, Burroughs and Bacon. Although he managed to photograph Bacon and Burroughs together and Beckett separately, Bacon would have nothing to do with Beckett stating that there were no parallels between their work. In essence
