Ruby and Stripe

Made by: Ruth Dupre

Synopsis

Hilary keeps two chickens. She introduces us to Ruby and Stripe, who are kept like two little princesses. We see their living accommodation and their garden, their nest and their eggs. We see how Hilary cares for them until they go to the big coop in the sky. We end up being fond of the chickens, but even fonder of Hilary who has such warmth, compassion and love for birds that most people regard as uninteresting and lacking in intelligence and character. She teaches us otherwise.

More Info

It is a simple and touching story. We hear but never see Hilary as she introduces us to her chickens. What we really learn about though, is her affection for Ruby and Stripe, and through that, what an unusually caring person she is. We are left with a surprising affection for the chickens, bringing out in us a general sense of well being and optimism. It is also a story of recycling and productive use of domestic space. If we all kept chickens, this country would be a better place.
