More Info

Although the people of Kono live on land rich in gold and diamonds, the mineral wealth has largely brought only misery. During Sierra Leones civil war (1991-2002) the region was over run by a brutal rebel army called the RUF who used the diamonds to fund their campaign of terror. Now after seven years of peace the people of Kono are still not benefiting fully from their natural resources. Large foreign companies are buying up land, in some cases forcing local communities from their homes.
