4docs launch event charity announced

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 posted by mullighan

Tonight, you might have noticed, we are (re)launching 4docs, and celebrating with a party at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s club. All tickets allocated (sorry) but we thought you might be interested in a new hook up with the Open Film Club, a most excellent organisation which uses the power of film to engage homeless and excluded people in creative cultural communities.

We’ve a tombola tonight, and prizes include DVDs, Cinephilia West membership, passes to Branchage and Sheffield Doc/Fest (thanks, all). Tickets are £0.50 (three for a pound!), and all proceeds will go to the Open Film Club. Founder Christoph Worrack will be joining me on the stage for the draw.

Open Film Club have been showing shorts and features to rough sleepers in Soho weekly since 2005 and welcomed filmmakers including Kevin Macdonald, Beeban Kidron, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. From January 2010, in partnership with Shooting People, Future Shorts and Homeless Link, OFC launches in 17 homelessness services in four UK regions, and members will be given the chance to build confidence, literacy and hard practical skills through making their own films and designing their own websites, and gaining access to training, work placements and small business development. Open Film Club is open source and open to people more used to doors being closed.

Sundance 2010 – earlybird deadline for shorts & grants for documentary filmmakers

Sundance Film Festival

“I’ve always felt that anyone who is truly interested in independent film should pay attention to shorts. They are often an indication of what’s coming down the creative pike.” (Robert Redford, Sundance Institute President and Founder)

The snow-capped mountains of Utah’s finest film festival may not be throwing open its doors for another six months, but filmmakers should be looking ahead to looming submission deadlines. For US & International short films, the earlybird deadline for Sundance 2010 is Monday, August 17 2009. It’s well worth getting your short doc in early, with a palatable $35 entry fee as opposed to $50, or $75 if you’re late.

The Documentary Shorts strand in 2009 showcased a great programme. As ever, there was a wide range of delectable stories, including Eva Weber’s Steel Homes which looks at the poigniant, funny and bizarre stories of people who – for one reason or another – have had to store their most treasured possesions in self-storage units. Like metal cubes rattling with memories, the film juxtaposes the clinical surroundings with intimate stories. You can watch an interview with Eva from the festival here.

On a different note, it’s also worth having a read of this recent article in Voice of America about Robert Redford and Jeff Skoll’s $3-million film project Stories of Change. This was set up by Redford and Skoll in order to give filmmakers $150,000 to produce documentaries. Lovely stuff.
