End of week round up

Friday, November 27th, 2009 posted by Helen Jack

200-200-mpu-winHaving wound down from Encounters Short Film Festival last week, I’m beginning to settle in to the Christmas slump. Festival hopping over the past six months has been fun, but exhausting too. For all the Christmas-slump sympathisers out there, I’ve decided to ease your slide into mulled wine season and give you some key dates for the next couple of months. This means you can spend more time drinking winter pimms and less time worrying about what you might be missing.

November deadlines

30th: You still have FOUR days left to upload your 3 Minute Wonder for our ‘It’s good to know…a film competition’. By entering, you have the chance of winning some pound coins (2000 of them), as well as having a panel of pros watch your film. If they like it – and so does Channel 4 – you might get it on the telly. Fancy that!

December deadlines

1st: Bridging the Gap. Sumbit your idea for a short doc and you may well win £8,000 (plus 8k worth of training and facilities), as well as advice and support with development.

1st: Submission deadline for The London International Documentary Festival (29 April – 8 May 2010)

4th: Submission deadline for DocsBarcelona (2 – 7 Feb 2010)

4th: It’s All True – International Documentary Film Festival (8 – 18 April 2010)

7th: Submission deadline for Tempo (10 – 14 March 2010)

14th: Submission deadline for Tribeca Film Festival (21 April – 6 May 2010)

20th: Sumission deadline for Dox Box (3 – 11 March 2010)

31st: Submission deadline for Documenta Madrid – International Madrid Documentary Festival (7 – 16 May 2010)

January deadlines

8th: Submission deadline for Munich International Documentary Film Festival (5 – 12 May 2010)

15th: Submission deadline for DocAviv – The Tel Aviv International Documentary Film Festival (6 – 15 May 2010)

something for the weekend

90 seconds. Plenty of time.

90 seconds. Plenty of time.

Are you familiar with depicT!, the 90 second film challenge from the good folk who bring us the annual short film extravaganza, Encounters? They are closing entries on Monday. That’s this weekend to make a 90 second film. Go on – and docs are, of course, welcome.

The depicT! team is also now running a Europe-wide young persons film initiative called Electric December.

They are looking for submissions under five minutes from filmmakers under 21, or organisations working with young people from across Europe.

Every year Electric December receives thousands of hits from over 90 countries worldwide. The films receive a huge audience – not only online, but through the official Electric December DVD and through the UK’s BBC Big Screens.

Last year’s winners received a travel bursary to attend the BUFF Young People’s Film Festival in Malmo, Sweden and took part in workshops, met key people from the industry, screened their films in a cinema and generally had a fantastic film-filled weekend.

The deadline is Friday 25 September 2009, and is open now.

Pinny Grills’ Peter and Ben – a perfect festival short doc

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 posted by Rebecca Frankel

Here is one of my favourite docs of this year – and a grand example of the kind of thing that goes down well on the festival circuit.

Pinny Grills’ Peter and Ben is a dreamy and emotional film depicting the friendship between two lonesome outsiders; a man and a sheep.

In contrast to Pinny’s unconstrained use of the camera and beautiful visual style, there is a definite construction of a story. There is an actual narrative arch, rather than just a character portrait.

The soundtrack also really compliments the underlying nature/nature theme, and helps tie the film together.

Peter and Ben has been selected at numerous festivals, including all the big doco ones – SilverDocs, IDFA, HotDocs and SXSW.

FourDocs Festival Bursaries – win £1000 to finish your film

Monday, August 18th, 2008 posted by Rebecca Frankel

We have opened up for applications! In this first round, FourDocs will be awarding 3 people £1000 each to finish their documentary in tip-top shape for festivals. It’s up to you how to spend the cash. You might want some animation, a specially written soundtrack, or to hire a top notch editor to re-structure it. All you need to apply is a documentary project you are already working on, and some idea of what you’d do with the money to make the film better. There are full details of how to apply on our bursaries page.
