something for the weekend

90 seconds. Plenty of time.

90 seconds. Plenty of time.

Are you familiar with depicT!, the 90 second film challenge from the good folk who bring us the annual short film extravaganza, Encounters? They are closing entries on Monday. That’s this weekend to make a 90 second film. Go on – and docs are, of course, welcome.

The depicT! team is also now running a Europe-wide young persons film initiative called Electric December.

They are looking for submissions under five minutes from filmmakers under 21, or organisations working with young people from across Europe.

Every year Electric December receives thousands of hits from over 90 countries worldwide. The films receive a huge audience – not only online, but through the official Electric December DVD and through the UK’s BBC Big Screens.

Last year’s winners received a travel bursary to attend the BUFF Young People’s Film Festival in Malmo, Sweden and took part in workshops, met key people from the industry, screened their films in a cinema and generally had a fantastic film-filled weekend.

The deadline is Friday 25 September 2009, and is open now.

see you in March?

see you in March?

We’re already huge fans of the annual music+film+interactive+more Austin bash, South By Southwest, taking place 12 – 20 March, 2010.

They’ve a nifty new feature where potential, logged in attendees can vote for the panels they’d like to see get put up. Voting closes 11:59 CST on Friday, September 4. That’s tomorrow.

Meantime, submissions are being sought. The early deadline is 25 November for shorts, and the fee is $25.

This pitching competition – clarification

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 posted by Rebecca Frankel

There have been a lot of questions about this Passat Pitching competition and how it works to win the £5000. So, here is the deal. You can do whatever you want, as long as you submit a visual clip up to 3 minutes (it can be shorter if you want though), which gives us an idea of the longer film you want to make. You can provide something like a taster tape, introducing a character or scene, or you can do a photomontage and explain the story, or you can animate a few key moments against a soundtrack. Just imagine that this is the only means you have available to communicate what you want to do, the kind of film you are hoping to make and what it might look like. (more…)

Pitch us your idea and win a £5k camera!

As we’re drawing a close to our 3MW My Home Town competition, I’m sure you’re wondering what we’ve got up next for you. Well, we’ve teamed up with Passat, who sponsor documentaries across Channel 4, and sorted out a pretty amazing prize, and a new type of competition.

Instead of submitting a finished 3 minute film, we want you to pitch an idea for a longer documentary that you want to make, loosely based on the theme ‘beautifully engineered’. However, you need to make your pitch online! What we looking for is people who think filmically, so this is not the place to just talk us through your idea.

We want to see your style and flair, or meet your character, or understand a little of what the film might feel like. Rather than a taster tape, what we’ll be looking for is a visual mood board that will convince us that you’re a creative director with vision and a story, who needs to be let loose. Then, in November we’ll pick the best pitch, and give them £5 000 to spend on equipment to get the film made. How does that sound?

Our next 3 Minute Wonder theme is ‘My Home Town’. We’ve taken inspiration from Guy Maddin, who just made a docu-fantasia film My Winnipeg, to excellent reviews.
